Biography:

Information from Highland Council’s Register of Interments, which commenced in 1927. The lair owner when he died was the deceased himself. He was involved in a tragic drowning accident bringing seaweed back from Crowlin (see Captain Murchison’s Master in Sail book) which saw him lose a son and daughter. Another son (Duncan) was badly shell-shocked in World War I, and another son Kenny went to Australia where it is believed that  he joined the police. There was a MacRae ranch in Oregon which belonged to a relative of his (a brother or uncle?). The owner of this MacRae ranch sponsored several Applecross men who went to work in the USA in the early 20th century. Coinneach Mòr was a crofter, his wife was from Kishorn, and they lived in the first house (no longer standing)  when you went to Upper Toscaig to the north of Ali MacLeod’s old house – it was demolished to make way for the road to Upper Toscaig. The floor was made of stone flagstones which were kept polished so well that they were (according to Rhoda Cameron) “like a diamond”. He had a daughter Beataidh Choinnich Mhòir, who married a MacKay and lived in Avoch.
