Biography:

Crofter and fisherman. Roderick MacDonald was born in Achachork; after the township was cleared the family lived in Poll Domhainn (Ardbain?); then the family went to Crowlin. Roderick’s father was Calum a’ Ghobha. Roderick’s mother was a MacLennan, whose family already had Crowlin connections. She was related to Mrs MacAulay, who was in Ardbain at one time. Roderick came ashore to Toscaig circa 1882/1883.  Roderick swapped houses with the MacLeans, Càrn Bàn, Toscaig, who wanted to go to Crowlin. The MacLean house was in poor condition, so Roderick lived there very briefly before building his own house further down the road in Lower Toscaig. Roderick and his wife Anne had a big family – at least nine daughters and one son survived to adulthood. The son, John MacDonald (Seonaidh Rìgh) attained a high rank in the police in Glasgow.
