Biography:

According to family history supplied to Applecross Heritage Centre in 2011 by William Manson, Edinburgh: “… Murdo (and two of his brothers) travelled to Canada and the USA where it is believed they worked on a sheep farm in Washington State. They also visited Montana, British Columbia and Nova Scotia. It is thought that they remained there until after the First World War … Murdo MacKenzie returned to Scotland, married Jessie Beaton (1884-1956) and ran a grocer’s shop at 47 Seabanks, Cromarty.” According to the Highland Council’s Register of Interments for Applecross, Jessie Beaton MacKenzie died in Kyle of Lochalsh, but this is contradicted by both the above family story, and the gravestone detail. She was a daughter of Murchadh Mòr nan Uamhag (Murdo Beaton).
