According to family history supplied to Applecross Heritage Centre in 2011 by William Manson, Edinburgh: “In 1914, Donald MacKenzie left his job as a labourer on Lord Middleton’s estate and volunteered for the Highland Mountain Brigade, Ross Battalion. He travelled to Bedford for training where he contracted measles and died in he isolation hospital there on 13th December 1914.”
