Biography:

Eleanor Hesp was a domestic Servant in the Middleton household at Applecross House. Ross-shire Journal, 18 February 1876: Rejoicing at Applecross – On the occasion of the marriage of the Hon Miss Leila L. Willoughby, second daughter of the Right Hon. Lord Middleton, with the Rev H C Russel of Wentworth, Rotherham, which was solemnised at Birdsall, York, on the 10th inst., there were great rejoicings at Applecross. On the evening of same day both sides of the Applecross bay showed a brilliant appearance by all the houses from the mansion house to the poorest cottage being beautifully illuminated, and mottos of long life and happiness to the Hon. Bride L. L. M. Willoughby and bridegroom. At 7 o’clock p.m. the servants and inhabitants, to about the number of three hundred, accompanied by a piper assembled around a huge bonfire, erected on an eminence facing the bay called “Creggan na H-Iolair” (Eagles Craig); after the match had been put to the pile by Mrs Hesp, housekeeper, who has been in the service of Lord Middleton for upwards of twenty four years, mountain due (sic) was freely supplied, and the health of the newly married couple was drunk with great enthusiasm, wishing them long life and happiness. The health of Lord and Lady Middleton and other members of the family were drank amidst prolonged and deafening cheers; after which old and young joined in a dance to the stirring strains of the bag pipes. After enjoying themselves to their hearts’ content the whole company dispersed most pleasantly. The tenants of Ardhue, not wishing to be behind, erected another which, when lighted, was to be seen from the mouth of Kyleakin to the sound of Ronay. Also the tenants of Fernabeg, wishing to show a similar demonstration, had another which was visible at Shieldaig, Torridon and part of Gairloch.
