Biography:

He had a share in the ‘Màiri Bhàn Òg’  with ‘Ain Dungain (John MacDonald), roughly around 1905 after his marriage. Fisherman on the ‘Isa Wood’. John Cameron was born in Duirinish – his father (Donald Cameron) was from Ardneaskan and his mother (Elizabeth MacRae) was from Cuaig. He was working for Donaldson at the salmon fishing  – in the winter time, they took ice from a loch in the hills and stored it in caves at Uags, the ice being used to keep the salmon fresh in the summer. He was also at the kippering with Spring, a kippering company, in Kyle of Lochalsh. He was a slaughterman in Stornoway, and also killed the cattle for locals in Applecross, receiving a piece of the meat as payment. He was also a shepherd on the banks of the Yellow River, Montana, in around 1909. As a young man, he worked on Laggan Locks, part of the Caledonian Canal. One day, the lock gates wouldn’t open – an eel’s tail was around six feet over the top of the lock gate and it’s head jammed underneath!
