Biography:

Duncan Murchison was a native of Crowlin. He had a shop in Camusterrach. When he came from Crowlin, he went to Ardubh first, staying in what is now known as Tigh an Òchoin. Donald MacNair (Dòmhnall Choinnich) bought this house from Duncan Murchison for around £30 (?). Murchison came to Camusterrach around 1883. When his male customers were getting married, Murchison used to gift them a pocket watch. Only one is believed to still exist. Duncan’s mother (Janet MacDonald, a sister of Rìgh Chròlaig) made a blanket which is now held at Applecross Heritage Centre. The blanket it believed to date from around about the 1840s. According the the Ross-shire Journal 9 January 1880: •”Marriage – at Drummonds Temeprance Hotel, Glassport St, Glasgow, on the 1st inst. By the Rev Kenneth MacDonald, Applecross, assisted by Rev Ewan Gordon of Main St free Church, Glasgow, Duncan Murchison, merchant, to Elizabeth, youngest daughter of William Murchison, both of Applecross.”
