Biography:

His full name was Murdo John MacDonald, known as Murchadh Ruadh. See family tree provided by Noreen MacDonald, Lincoln Park, Michigan (2002).  It is believed that Murdo John MacDonald’s grandmother was over 100 when she died. An entry in the Ross-shire Journal (3 March 1882) states that the only death in Applecross in the last quarter of 1881 was that of a”… female aged 101.”  John Ferguson, Raasay, had a tradition that she was 105 when she died. One of his sons, Captain Kenneth MacDonald, was awarded an MBE (or similar) for charting the Magellan Straits. Kenneth used to give prizes to the children of Applecross SChool, up until around the 1940s.
