Biography:

Note in Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. L (1976-78) page 223: “Captain Donald Gillies was born and reared in the township of Calla Cille in Applecross. He was known as Dòmhnal Cam as a result of a gun explosion which blinded him in one eye. His life was mainly spent at sea and he became the owner of a trading smack, making voyages as far afield as Ireland. None of his songs seem to have survived. He composed in English as as in Gaelic and died, unmarried, in 1877.” Stone blown over in storms, January 2012.
