Biography: Boat builder and carpenter. Mortie Ali used to make coffins, he built boats, and was also the ferryman taking the rowing boat out to the Stornoway mail steamer – in the era of the ‘Sheila’ and the ‘Loch Ness’. He was married twice: his first wife was a niece of the Gordons from Toscaig (the Dols and the Dac). Her mother was the Gordons’ sister. Her maiden surname was MacKay, and she had a brother Alec MacKay in Plockton. Mortie Ali had two sons (Roddy – Ruairidh Mhortie Ali) and Ali (Ali Mhortie Ali) who lived in the Dumfries area. Mortie Ali had two sisters, both married in Ardneaskan, Lochcarron: Flora was married to Murdo MacKenzie (Murchadh Dhòmhnaill, whose sons had the ‘Clan MacKenzie’and the ‘Caberfeidh’; and Johan, married to Finlay MacRae (Fionnlagh Buidhe), whose son had the ‘Johan’.
