Biography:

Brother  of John Gillies (Fiocair). He was one of the original crew on the ‘Isa Wood’ in 1926. He had one son, Donald (Donac), and a daughter, Morag MacBeath (Mòrag Ali Dhòmhnaill) who lives in Wales (2012). His father Donald (Dòmhnall)  was working on the road between Torridon and Kinlochewe, roughly in the 1870s, when he awoke on a beautiful early morning in late winter. He immediately began to prepare to leave for Applecross. When asked where he was going he said: “Tha mi a’ dol dhachaigh. (I’m going home)”. When asked why he said: “Cha tàinig àm seinn nan eòin fhathast (The tinme for the birds to be singing hasn’t come yet).” So he left and made it home to Applecross before a blizzard struck that kept his colleagues confined to their bothy, not working and unpaid, for several weeks.
